Movies on your TV, courtesy of your gaming console

All three of the major gaming consoles now support the delivery of Internet-based movie and TV content to your TV screen. The biggest news here is that each of these consoles supports a downloadable Netflix application. (See more details at www.netflix.com.) With just your Internet connection and a monthly service plan that starts at only $7.99 per month, you can watch any of tens of thousands of movies and thousands of TV shows on demand — any time you want, as much as you want.

Not all movies are available on this streaming plan, so if you want to watch the latest releases, you’ll need to upgrade your monthly plan to include DVDs or Blu-ray discs. Netflix isn’t your only choice; you can also use your console to access YouTube videos or other movie services like Vudu (www.vudu.com; available on the PlayStation 3) or Hulu Plus (www.hulu.com; supported on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3).

You can also access Netflix, Vudu, Hulu Plus, and other video services from a networked Blu-ray disc player or television, if you have one (as well as on your computer, tablet, or smartphone). Almost all new Blu-ray disc players support these services over a wired or wireless connection, and an increasing number of TVs also include this functionality. Most TVs and Blu-ray disc players support only wired connections, so you’ll need either a wireless Ethernet adapter or an Ethernet cable in your home theater to make this work.
